As a former carpenter, Frank is no stranger to making things.
People passing Frank’s garage at the ECH Winzor Village can watch him working with soft drink cans rather than wood.
Inside his home there are hats, helicopters and even aeroplanes that the 95-year-old has crafted out of used soft drink cans.
“It all started 10 years ago when I saw a hat made out of coke cans,” says Frank. “I just thought I’d have a go at making one and now I’ve made more than 1,000 hats. It’s just a hobby. People see them and say, I wish I had one and I always say, well give me 12 cans and I’ll make you one.”
Frank moved into his independent retirement living unit 13 years ago with his wife Norma. Sadly, Norma passed away three years ago, but Frank still has plenty of friends in the village.
“There’s a wonderful crew in here,” he said. “I’ve never had an argument with anyone and there’s always something to do. I have a card game with my neighbours during the week and Sundays we have drinks and a chat.
“My wife used to love all the social activities in the village. She was always doing something.”
Frank loves the community atmosphere in his village and that he knows his neighbours.
Today he works with his garage door open, so there’s always people passing by and stopping for a chat.
“There’s always someone to talk to,” he says. “People like to stop and have a look at what I’m making.”
You can also find Frank stretching his legs on the golf course, or spending time with his 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren – just look for a man wearing a tin can hat!
